Lin, Jennifer and Susan Warner. Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running. Kansas City: Andrews McMeel, 2006.
Here’s what I wrote on LibraryThing:
This is a book of inspirational stories about women running together, women running for recovery, women running for themselves. From personal goals of fighting cancer to group goals of running as a centipede in a marathon, every story comes together with humor and poignancy. There is the woman running to celebrate health and the one who runs to honor loss. Every woman has a reason for running and this book illustrates that point.
Yes, there is definitely going to be a definite split between LT blogs and what I put here. I think I explained that one well enough already.
My favorite lines:
“If I wanted to take orders from a man I would have married one” (p 12).
“She walks with a slight hitch, but she still lifts weights and runs 35 miles a week, just for herself” (p 14). Are you doing the math, people? That would be 5 miles a DAY, or 8.5 miles every other.
“The event was apologetically girly” (p 25). Never apologize for what you are.
“I ran to keep my heart beating” (p 59).
If you take that first step, do everything in your power to also take that last step” (p 92).
I read this because of Sarah. Thanks to her, it was the first gentle nudge towards getting back to running. I needed the nudge. I hope she doesn’t mind that I left it for another friend – to inspire & motivate.
i finally found time to sit down and read a little of it. the stories thus far are wonderful! i love the line “If I wanted to take orders from a man I would have married one” … go figure. that’s so me!! my appointment for my knee is tomorrow. i’ll let you know the verdict. if he gives me the ok, i think i’m going to find some random 5k to run this weekend as a celebration just for fun.
When one finds good inspiration, what better way to celebrate than to share it with others. I am sure that Sarah will be glad to know that this book is having a “ripple effect” of inspiration that all started with her.
Bec~ Definitely let me know how the knee is. I just signed up for my first 5K – of course it’s a charity event!
RT~ I totally agree. It’s hard enough to stay self motivated so its nice when an unexpected push comes along.
current diagnosis is simply patellar tendonitis and iliotibial syndrome. both common and nothing to be too concerned about. however he has little concern about the meniscus and wants to do an mri to be sure there isn’t a slight tear. if i wasn’t going to continue running he wouldn’t bother but since i have no intention of slowing down he feels better ruling it out. i was going to try a short run tonight but i’m totally exhausted and can’t seem to muster the energy. this weekend i will. just an easy one though. i’ll be good.
i’m so glad you both enjoyed the book. though i’m not anywhere near being able to run…i am inspired by the things you both have accomplished and reminded not to be a couch potato 🙂
forgive me … play list is burned to cd (took two actually it was so long) but has yet to make it in the mail. i’ll get it out the door this weekend. sorry 😦
No biggie~ I’m still sticking to 31 minutes per run. When I brave my way to a longer run I’ll let you know 😉
