African Generosity George

African GenerosityI was going to ask everyone I knew to play the music game again. This time with a twist: give me African music for my next 5k. Darfur. The rules would be simple: stay away from South Africa, get as close to Sudan as possible, and mention nothing that would put me to sleep. No zzzzs please. I thought it would be a fun challenge & had bets going that not many people would suggest anything.
But, before I could post anything, before I could put my musical dare in print, a guy named George blew the challenge away. I mentioned my run, mentioned my music, mentioned my need and before I knew it had more music than I knew what to do with. Well, I have a plan, now. Between now and next Saturday I’ll listen to as much as I possibly can and make a mix from what moves me. George knows music.

  1. I had this “World Beat” tape (long long time ago, back in the days of walkmans) I used to walk to. It was an ecclectic mix of tribal sounds. Loved it!
What comes to mind is Sting’s “Desert Rose” as a more current possibilty? Maybe? I dunno…

  2. When I was in high school I had this thing for Micky Hart. On the surface I was Duran Duran but in my heart I was a diehard drum fan. He had really tribal sounds, too.
I love “Desert Rose”! I really think that could work so I’m gonna have to out that into a setlist! Thanks

  3. I did a doubletake when I read this title….I tried to think back to any of our past conversations and wonder “Did we ever talk about African music???” and then I read the rest of the blog…whoops. I have to admit, I don’t have much by way of music from Africa. I have this feeling I should explore this sound sometime soon…could use a soundtrack to run to as well…
well, fast walk this week…tweaked my knee a bit, but I’ll be back on track soon… 🙂

  4. Too funny. I think you have met my George. Sirsy fan…
Speaking of running…Just got off the tread – 2.25 in 23 min. My new fave: Mal Wa Ihtagab. Totally transcends.
PS~ walking is good too – went for a huge walk with the hubby today -yup, in addition to the run – it was too gorgeous not to!

  5. I am so glad to hear you love Desert Rose. 🙂 It makes me feel so good when I hear it…I walk better or just dance to it to move.
OOOH OOOH what about Tusk by Fleetwood Mac! Tribal beat and the drums!!! Maybe I am too far off on that one.
    Erica Badoo maybe?
Also check this out awesome and very much made for moving! It’s called AFrican /Latin Tribal sounds. Maybe???

  6. Hey! It took me some time to check this out, but it’s cool! It’s nice and long, too.
LOVE Tusk! What a great suggestion! You rock! 🙂
